What is Ephemeral Sculpture

By definition ephemeral means to last one day or for a very short time.
It is somewhat of a contradiction when juxtaposed with sculpture, an
art form that brings to mind the great artifacts that have lasted for millennium.

The works produced in this series are only meant to last one day or a
very short time after their completion. Each work is produced in a
spontaneous manner and on short notice. Each work is comprised of found
on-site materials, nothing is brought to the site and nothing is left
that was not originally on site.

The Documentation

Because the work is so short lived documentation is necessary. Our
quandary with preserving and presenting the work after it has expired is
the reliance on photography. This creates a conflict between the
photograph and the work of Art, raising a question about which is the
work of art. The answer lies ideally in the dependence on witnesses who
share in the experience of the work while it exists. The "witness
list" signed by the participants becomes part of the permanent
documentation history of the series.

The Odyssey

During the course of our journey we will be creating and documenting
sculpture where we can find it and invite witnesses to be included in the
event. Our sojourn begins in California over land to New York
followed by a trans-Atlantic sailing to the United Kingdom. our final
destination is Spain by way of France.
